| Ubuntu - One Month On. |
[01 May 2007|06:12pm] |
Today it has been one month since I starting using Ubuntu full-time and not touching Windows unless I really have to.
It has gone well. I only needed to use Windows once to check a software download I was recommending to a friend, and that was it!
The trial of using Linux in favour of Windows was partly easy for me as I only do a small range of stuff on the computer, mostly programming, email, browsing the internet, listening to the radio, playing with GoogleEarth, and I was able to find the software to do all that easily.
There have been some pitfalls along the way, but nothing major.
RealPlayer didn't work properly but I found a replacement for it, so I have my radio.
Trying to get two monitors working didn't go well and I mucked up my graphics system a bit and that took a while to repair. I'm back on one monitor again. I might not have two monitors going yet but I at least know it is possible. I just need to read more about it.
GoogleEarth, under Wine, has it's quirks in Ubuntu but it's still usable.
I'm still trying to find a good replacement for DreamWeaver and am using Nvu at the moment but it's not the same. Also, I want to create stuff in Flash soon and there doesn't seem to be a replacement for that.
Oh the whole, the experiment has been a good experience. I proved to myself that I can get things done just with Linux but it has taken a lot of reading and tweaking. I did have moments of thinking 'Argh, I could do this straight away in Windows' but ploughed on.
I can see the appeal of Windows, everything I am used to doing works there, I don't have to find replacements that work nearly the same but not quite but I am slowly tweaking Ubuntu into something I'm happy with.
I'm going to let myself use Windows again for stuff I can't do comfortably in Ubuntu but I'll try to use Linux solutions first.

So, April 1st has arrived and so starts my move to using Linux the majority of the time and trying to use Windows XP Pro only when absolutely necessary...
( The Preparation for The Change. )
Having prepared as much as I could I was all ready for my first day of using Win XP less.
( The 1st Day. )
So, it is looking hopeful, so far. Let's see what the coming week brings. :)

| A Look Back at March. A Look Forwards to April. |
[31 Mar 2007|12:34am] |
The earlier part of March saw me travelling down to London to see my family and help them with their computer. It was interesting as always to be with them. I'm trying to get my mum computer literate enough so that she can google for information and contact me by email. :O)
My sister and neice came into London with me to see me off and we went for a little wander about before it was time to head to the coach station. I decided St. Paul's Cathedral and The Embankment at Blackfriars was probably the easiest for a quick wander about. It was a lovely sunny day, for the most part, and I took a few pics.
Pics: St Paul's and The Thames at Blackfriars.
I was given a knitted monkey that was being given away free on packs of a certain brand of tea and I'm really quite pleased with it. You can put it into all kinds of funny poses. Eg.:

The end part of the month was mostly taken up with various problems with my computer, doing re-installs of XP and Ubuntu, updates and tuning things to how I like them.
Now that I've got Ubuntu doing most of the things I do every day I've decided to try an experiment. Starting on April 1st, I want to see how long I can go without using Windows.
I know it won't be easy at first, like now, I could be in Linux but my favourite LJ client, Semagic, doesn't seem to have a Linux version, so that's something I need to find a replacement for. I've already hit some 'problems' with Ubuntu but at the moment I'm putting them down to not knowing enough about what I might be able to install to improve things, but I plan to do research and find answers.
I'll keep you updated with my progress. Wish me luck! :O)

| What happened to February? |
[29 Mar 2007|06:53pm] |
I mean to post at least once a month but I seem to have forgotten February. I can only put it down to still coming out of hibernation from Winter.
Not much went on. There was some sun and some snow.
The rest is hazy...

| Workspaces |
[12 Aug 2006|04:45pm] |
So... Last year we convinced Ky to show us where he works and recently Mariposa showed us where she works, now I'm being asked to show where I work.
Not much to see, I work from home either sat on the livingroom floor with a laptop or at my desk in the bedroom. Sadly, no plants yet.
Anyone else inspired to show where they work or their desk?
:O)

| Humblehope heads outside! |
[21 Jul 2006|11:52am] |
I rarely have much to say here, but I thought I'd come out of my shell a bit and declare that I'm really happy with the camera in my new phone. So happy in fact, I've been looking for any excuse to get out of the house and take pics of things. :O)
My first little jaunts were to document the walk to the local shop that I often talk of heading off to and an event in the park.
Play Spot Mez. He's in both collections somewhere... :O)

| Heard on the radio... |
[12 Apr 2006|12:47pm] |
I was listening to 'Quote, Unquote' on the radio today and they were wondering about the authorship of the following poem, which I liked, so I looked it up.
( If A Child... )

I seldom have that much to say here, Although I often sit and read. Someone asked me to write something, Now I have I'm off to feed.
